Plan of Leigham Court Road in 1839

1839 Street Plan

The above plan was made by an attorney and solicitor turned property developer in the early 19th century called Beriah Drew. The plan was made in 1839 and shows the proposed development to the area. The railway cutting on the line to Crystal Palace is not shown as being complete but it is the development of the railway through Streatham Hill that was the reason for the rapid development of Streatham in the following half century.

The approximate original location of the plot for 55 Leigham Court Road, as we now know it, is shown as a rectangle labelled '55'. Prior to this development, much of the land was either farm land (Mount Nod Farm) or orchards.

Leigham Court Road originally cut across Streatham High Road and continued along the railway line. In the early 20th century this continuation was renamed Drewstead Road sustaining the connection with Beriah Drew.
